Looking for lamps

I am a girl who loves to take pictures of everything! Someone told me once "you like to document everything!" She was right, also like to look for cute and interesting things.

Soy una chica que ama tomar fotos de todo! Alguien me dijo alguna vez ‘’parece que tienes que documentar todo’’

 One day, while I was talking on the phone with a friend in Mexico, she told me that she had been looking for lamps, so I said to her “Why don’t we take a virtual shopping trip together to Atlanta to look for cute lamps? And if I find something interesting I will take a picture and send it to you’’ (That’s one of the reasons I love smartphones) She agreed, obviously! The very next day I took a walk in this cute neighborhood and went into this furniture store looking for lamps.

Un dia, mientras platicaba por teléfono con una amiga en México, me dijo que estaba buscando lámparas, asi que le dije ‘’Porqué no hacemos juntas, de manera virtual, una busqueda en Atlanta de lamparas lindas? Y si encuentro algo interesante le tomo una foto y te la mando’’ (Este es uno de los motivos por los cuales me encantan los smartphones) Mi amiga estuvo deacuerdo con el plan, obviamente! El siguiente dia mientras hacia una caminata en nuestro lindo vecindario entré a una muebleria buscando lamparas.

I found one that I loved but no matter how crazy I am about taking pictures of everything, sometimes I still have a little bit of prudence and think, ‘’Maybe its not permitted to take pictures here, what should I do?’’

Encontré una que me gustó pero no importa que tan loca sea con eso de tomar fotos de absolutamente todo, algunas veces tengo algo de prudencia y pienso “Quizá no está permitido tomar fotos aqui, qué puedo hacer?’’

 Right! Maybe you were thinking the same thing, ‘’Pretend that you are interested in some furniture, make small talk with the sales person, then ask in a very polite way if it’s possible to take a picture’’

Exacto! Tal vez pensaron lo mismo que yo, ‘’Fingir que estoy interesada en los muebles del lugar, hacer un poco de platica con la vendedora y luego preguntar amablemente si existe la posibilidad de tomar una foto’’

IKEA Atlanta

 So I did and it worked! I took the picture and sent it to my friend. But there was a little problem, they trapped me! And now I love the store, I love the chairs, I love the sofas, tables, bookcases… everything! Not to mention Roberta, the sweetest sales woman who was very gentle and kind from the beginning. She has good taste, a nice voice and she look at you like she already knows you. 

Eso hice y funcionó! Tomé la foto y se la envié a mi amiga. Pero hubo un pequeño problema, me atraparon! Y ahora amo esta tienda, me encantan las sillas, me encantan los sillones, las mesas, los libreros… todo! Eso sin mencionar a Roberta, la mas linda vendedora que jamas haya conocido, muy amable desde el inicio. Con buen gusto, una voz suave, ella me miraba como si ya me conociera de antes.

The second day I went there with Ricardo and when we were at the door the other salesman shouted: “Teresa, we were waiting for you to come back!’’ I showed Ricardo my idea for the dinning room: a wood table with modern chairs. We had a long assessment with the sales man, who made us a demo on his computer with all the possible combinations of chairs in different colors and styles.

At the end they invited us to come back to learn more about modern design over a glass of wine.

That’s what I call excellent customer service.

La segunda vez que fui a esa tienda, fui con Ricardo y desde que pusimos un pie en la tienda uno de los vendedores exclamó ‘’Teresa, te estabamos esperando!’’ Le mostré a Ricardo la idea que yo tenia para el comedor: mesa de madera natural con sillas modernas. Tuvimos una asesoria con el vendedor, quien nos hizo un demo en su computadora con todas las posibles combinaciones de sillas de diferentes colores y estilos con la mesa que me gustó.

Al final nos invitaron para volver a la tienda y platicar mas acerca de arte y diseño moderno, con una copa de vino.

Eso es lo que yo llamo excelente servicio al cliente.

Settling in

We arrived in January and we lived the first month in a corporate apartment (all furnished and set up) we only needed to buy some groceries.

Llegamos en Enero y estuvimos en unos departamentos amueblados (con todo listo) sólo necesitabamos comprar algunas provisiones.

Our neighborhood reminded me of a few places:
- Chapalita, in Guadalajara, because you can find everything within walking distance.
- A neighborhood in Houston, where I stayed with my friends in college.
- Hershey, Pennsylvania, because the cold January weather made me want a cup of hot cocoa.

Diciembre 2010, Hershey PA

Nuestro vecindario me recordaba algunos lugares:
-Chapalita, en Guadalajara, porque podias encontrar lo que fuera a pie.
-Un vecindario en Houston, donde pasé unas vacaciones con mis amigas de la Universidad.
-Hershey, Pensylvania, porque con el clima frio de Enero se me antojaba una taza caliente de chocolate.

If you asked me about this transition period, I would say that it wasn’t an unknown or strange feeling, maybe because I was used to our trips to Hershey in the  five years before that.

Si me preguntas sobre este periodo de transición, diria que no fue como algo extraño o diferente, quizá porque ya me habia acostumbrado a los viajes largos en Hershey que habiamos hecho en los últimos 5 años.

It was really like another trip to Hershey, well the only small (big!!) difference was that this trip didn’t have a return date! Yezz!!

Era como cualquier otro viaje a Hershey, bueno la unica pequeña (gran!!) diferencia era que este viaje no tenia fecha de regreso! Cielos!

The things that bothered me a little about this move were that I wouldn’t be able to work and the language, I didn’t feel so much love for English. So I had a plan B.

Las cosas que me inquietaban un poco sobre esta mudanza era que no tendria permiso para trabajar y el idioma, no sentia mucho amor al Inglés. Asi que tuve un plan B.

Part of this plan consisted of improving my blog in English  and staying on track with the subjects that I like: patchwork, decorating, architecture, cooking, etc. With this idea I would kill 2 birds with one stone:

-       Improve my English writing skills, with the help of my new teacher and

-       Look for new inspiration in the areas that I was interested in.

Parte de este plan consistía en mejorar mi blog, haciéndolo en Inglés y seguir en los temas que me gustan: Patchwork, decoración, arquitectura, cocina etc. Con esta idea mataria dos pájaros de un tiro:

-       Mejorar mis habilidades para escribir en inglés, con la ayuda de mi nueva maestra y

-       Buscar mas inspiración sobre las areas que me gustaban.

Saying goodbye

All the papers were ready, so the only thing left was trying to have quality time with friends and family.

 I started saying goodbye to my students, giving them the news of our moving. I still remember each day I talked with them and tears came.

My oldest sister came with my nephew, my brother and Ricardo's cousin. We had a small party the day they came and I remember we went to sleep at sunrise. 

We traveled to Mexico City, for Christmas. And we returned on January 1st to Guadalajara, our last week living there, to pack our stuff and closed other contracts. 

Los documentos estaban listos, lo único que nos quedaba era pasar tiempo con nuestros amigos y familiares. 

Comencé a despedirme de mis alumnos al darles la noticia sobre nuestra próxima mudanza. Aun recuerdo esos dias y se me salen las lágrimas. 

Mi hermana mayor vino con mi sobrino, mi hermano y un primo de Ricardo. Tuvimos una pequeña reunión ese dia y recuerdo que nos fuimos a dormir cuando el sol iba saliendo.

Viajamos a la Ciudad de México a pasar Navidad. Regresamos el 1 de enero a Guadalajara, nuestra última semana alli,  para empacar nuestras cosas y terminar de cerrar pendientes.

City full of joy

Hello there! Well after receiving the formal job offer, Ricardo answered the proposal and sent them all the papers they needed and returned to our lovely city! Ready to party because 2 days before our arrival the Panamerican Games had started in Guadalajara.

Guadalajara was full of joy, schools were closed because of the Games and everybody was in this Panamerican mood. Friends from Mexico City were there, working in different areas so were Arturo, David, Lalo, Ric and Jimo.

Ricardo's sister and her family arrived at our house for the games. they went to the tennis finals and invited us to go to the swimming finals.

That week was one of my best holidays, hanging out with friends and the city filled with people from all over the continent!

I remember one day, when we went to our usual bar with friends, a couple of judges of the games arrived near closing time, we talk and celebrate with them and at the end they paid for all our drinks.

During that time,  while I was having breakfast with one of my friends from collage, I received a call (in English!) from the moving company! My heart was pounding! The next step was to wait for different papers for the visa permit. Our parents were very supportive through this process, so were our sibilings.

The Panamerican Games ended and my work increased as did my stress! Fortunately I continued exercising. 

The papers arrived and we made the appointment for the visa, it was December 8th when we got it and we then took a 3 day trip to Atlanta on December 13th in order to organize our permanent move. 

Hola a todos! Bueno después de recibir la propuesta formal, Ricardo  contestó y envió los documentos necesarios y regresamos a nuestra bella ciudad Guadalajara! Listos para festejar, porque dos días antes de que llegáramos habían empezado los Juegos Panamericanos en Guadalajara.

Guadalajara estaba llena de alegría, las escuelas habían suspendido clases por los juegos y se respiraba el ambiente Panamericano. Amigos de la ciudad de México estuvieron en Guadalajara, trabajando en diferentes áreas, así como nuestros amigos de allí, Arturo, David, Lalo y Jimena.

Mi cuñada y su familia también pasaron unos días en casa por los Juegos, fueron a las finales de tennis y nos invitaron a las finales de natación.

Esa semana fue una de mis mejores vacaciones, pasando tiempo con amigos, albercadas, reuniones y la ciudad llena con personas de todo el continente!

Recuerdo un día que fuimos al bar de siempre con nuestros amigos, cerca de la hora de cerrar el lugar llegaron jueces de los juegos, platicamos con ellos y celebramos, al final ellos pagaron nuestra cuenta.

En esos días, mientras desayunaba con una de mis amigas de la universidad, recibí una llamada (en Inglés!) de la compañía que haría nuestra mudanza! Me dio emoción y nervio a la vez! El siguiente paso era esperar que llegaran los papeles para tramitar la Visa. Nuestros padres siempre nos apoyaron en todo este proceso al igual que nuestros hermanos.

Los juegos Panamericanos terminaron y retomé mi trabajo con mas horarios que antes, aumento mi trabajo al igual que mi estrés. Afortunadamente seguía haciendo ejercicio.

Los papeles llegaron, hicimos la cita en el Consulado el 8 de Diciembre por la mañana, ese mismo día por la tarde nos entregaron nuestras visas. Luego hicimos un viaje de 3 días, el 13 de Diciembre, para conocer la ciudad y organizar nuestra futura llegada a Atlanta.

The Sweetest Place on Earth

Where were we? Do you remember that Ricardo had a 5 week trip to Pennsylvania?  And we were waiting for the formal job offer? Ok! So on September 11^th our friends took us to the airport after a small party and none of us had slept at all!

I’m going to tell you how the 5 week trip was in the shortest version I can. Are you ready?

We arrived in Hershey just 3 days after a flooding in town and here is the list of the principal activities that we did:
* We tried to continue  Pamela’s healthy plan (and sometimes we couldn’t), a diet we had started before  we left Mexico

* I worked out, but not as hard as I did in Guadalajara. Sometimes I ran around the  Medical Center, sometimes on different cute streets

* We hung out with old friends on September 16^th (Mexico Independence day)
* I spent some time with our Irish/American friends

* We met new friends from Monterrey, with whom I still  keep in touch
* I read, knitted and studied

 

* We discovered other places, like a small store (Grove’s)  that sells handmade candy.

 

* We made a quick trip to DC
* Ricardo received the formal job offer
* and we  finally said goodbye to Fall in America and hello to winter in Guadalajara.

I need to speed up my story and write in real time,  because its getting more difficult for me to write about events from the past.

 

En qué estábamos? Recuerdan que Ricardo tenia un viaje  de 5 semanas a Pennsylvania? Y que estábamos esperando la famosa oferta formal de trabajo? Ok!

El 11 de Septiembre nuestros amigos nos llevaron al aeropuerto, todos en vivo,  después de una pequeña reunion.

Les contaré cómo nos fue en esas 5 semanas de forma breve, estan listos?

Llegamos a Hershey justo 3 dias después de una terrible inundación y aqui en forma de lista estan las principals actividades que hicimos:

* Intentamos continuar con el plan saludable que nos dió Pamela (aunque no siempre pudimos) una dieta que empezamos antes de salir de viaje.
* Segui entrenando  pero no tan intensamente como en Guadalajara. Algunos dias corri en la pista alrededor del Centro Médico, otras veces por  diferentes calles
* Pudimos pasar con amigos el festejo del 16 de Septiembre (Dia de la Independencia en México)
* Ir a casa de amigos Irlandeses/Americanos y pasar un tiempo con sus hijos
* Conocí nuevas personas de Monterrey con quien actualmente estoy en contacto.

 

* Lei, teji, estudie

* Descubrimos nuevos y pequeños lugares como una pequeña tienda de dulces hechos a mano (Grove’s)

 

* Hicimos un viaje veloz a DC

* Ricardo recibió la oferta formal de trabajo y

* Finalmente dijimos adios al otoño Americano y hola al invierno en Guadalajara!

Necesito apresurarme con las historias en mi blog para escribir en tiempo real, porque se me esta dificultando escribir sobre historias del pasado.
