Martha and I finally met

Something amazing happened a couple of months ago.
Algo maravilloso ocurrió hace un par de meses.
 

I don’t remember exactly when I started visiting MarthaStewart’s website. Sometimes I did it looking for recipes, other times looking for decoration ideas for Christmas or Halloween. Then I realized how complete her website was, you can always get ideas from how to organize your closet, to how to throw a party with cute entrees, cocktails and games. Now it’s  part of my everyday routine: taking a quick look at her website and following some of her advice.

No recuerdo exactamente cuando fue que empecé a visitar el sitio web de Martha Stewart. Algunas veces lo hacia buscando recetas, otras buscando ideas para decorar en Navidad o Halloween. Me di cuenta de lo completo que estaba este sitio, siempre puedes encontrar muy buenas ideas desde cómo organizar tu closet hasta cómo hacer botanas, cocteles y juegos para una pequeña o grande fiesta.

Ahora es parte de mi rutina diaria: visitar su sitio web y seguir un par de ideas cada dia. 

Ricardo knows how much I like her, so he once bought me one of her books on Amazon as a gift. The day the book came to my house I called Ricardo at his office to thank him for the present and then he asked me “Do you like the book?’’ and I replied “Do I like it?! It’s the bible!!’’. He got confused and said “I think there was a mistake, because I bought Martha Stewart’s book, not a Bible!!’’ 

 

Ricardo sabe cuando me gusta Martha Stewart asi que me regaló uno de sus libros por Amazon. El día que el libro llegó a la casa le marqué a su oficina para agradecerle por el regalo y me preguntó ''Te gustó el libro?'' y yo le contesté ''Que si me gustó?!?! Es la biblia!!!!!!'' El se confundió y me dijo ''Creo que ha habido un error, yo te compré el libro de Martha Stewart, no una Biblia!''.

 

 You can call me crazy, but I really like this book (MarthaStewart’s Homekeeping Handbook). One of the sections that I have used more than once is the ‘’Moving’’ part. It has a complete list of  ‘’to do’s’’ before you move (monthly and weekly), and since it looks like we move as a hobby, I find it very useful. It also has tips about how to pack all your stuff. Maybe you are thinking ‘’What do you need to know about packing?? Just throw everything into boxes, that’s it!’

Puedes decir que estoy loca, pero realmente me gusta este libro (MarthaStewart’s Homekeeping Handbook ) 
Una de las secciones que he usado mas de una vez es la de ''Mudanza''. Tiene una lista muy completa de todo lo que debes hacer antes de mudarte (Por mes y por semanas) y como parece que nosotros nos mudamos como hobby, me ha sido bastante útil. Incluye también tips de sobre cómo empacar tus cosas, tal vez estaras pensando ''Qué hace falta saber sobre cómo empacar?? Solo mete todo en cajas y listo!''

But you know me, I’m a little OCD and I LOOOOVE to have everything packed with labels, bubbles, tissue paper, using the correct box size for my books, linens, shoes, grandmother’s china and my husband’s LCD friend.
Ok! I need to confess something: My name is Teresa and I am a ‘’packaholic’’.

 Pero ya me conocen, soy un poco TOC (Trastorno Obsesivo Compulsivo) y me encanta que todo esté perfectamente empacado con la etiqueta correcta, cacahuates, burbuja, papel de china, usando el tamaño correcto de cajas para libros, blancos, zapatos, la porcelana fina de la abuela y la amiga de mi esposo, su LCD.
OK! Debo confesar algo: Mi nombre es Teresa y soy ''empacadoholica''.

Other things that I have done thanks to Martha Stewart’s inspiration are:

-       Bingo cards and cupcakes for one of my girlfriend’s baby shower.

So, long story short, getting back to what happened last month. I had always dreamed about meeting Martha one day and when I moved to Atlanta the possibility of doing so increased. When I started my twitter account the second person I started following was, obviously, Martha Stewart!! Then, 5 weeks ago I read a tweet from her, saying that she would be at one Home Depot in Atlanta giving decoration tips for Christmas!!

I said… WHAAAT?!?!

Yes, I would finally be able to meet her! Of course I texted my mother and my two sisters (who are also big fans of Martha) Its funny how the three of them gave me 3 different suggestions for meeting Martha.

Bueno, al grano con la historia, regresando a lo que ocurrio hace unos meses. Siempre habia soñado en algun dia conocer a Martha Stewart y cuando nos mudamos a Atlanta mis probabilidades aumentaron. Cuando comencé con mi cuenta en Twitter la segunda persona a la que le dí follow fue, obviamente a Martha!! Hace unas semanas lei un tweet de ella, donde decia que estaria en el Home Depot de Atlanta dando tips de decoración para Navidad!
Yo dije.. ''QUEEEEEE???!!!''
Si, finalmente podria conocerla. Obvio en cuanto pude le escribi a mi madre y a mis hermanas (quienes tambien son grandes admiradoras de Martha) Fue muy curioso como cada una de ellas me dio diferentes sugerencias para el dia esperado.  

My mother told me “Please take a picture of her and send it to us, she looks younger than before and I think her skin looks just fab!

Claudia texted me: “Tell her that we love her and give her a hug from all of us’’

Ale said to me: You have to take a picture with her, just like the blogger Nicole Balch did!!”

The day came and my in-laws were here. I asked them if they wanted to come, they said yes. We arrived before the event was supposed to start, registered our names, chose our seats and waited until she showed up. I had three objectives:

-       get my book signed by her

-       complete my mother and sister’s requests and

-       take a photo with Martha for my blog.
El dia llegó y mi familia politica estaba aqui. Les pregunté si querian venir a Home Depot, dijeron que si. Llegamos antes de que el evento comenzara, nos registramos, elegimos nuestros asientos y esperamos hasta que Martha llegó. Yo tenia tres objetivos claros:
-Tener su firma en uno de mis libros
-Hacer los encargos de mi mamá y hermanas y
- Tomarme una foto con ella para mi blog. 

At the end of the event my sister in law helped me be the perfect stalker by chasing Martha inside the Home Depot! Thanks to her I got all of my objectives done!
Al final del evento mi cuñada me ayudo a convertirme en la perfecta acosadora para perseguir a Martha dentro de Home Depot! Gracias a ella pude conseguir mis objetivos!

Eames Molded Chair

Ourdate with the people at DWR arrived. Remember the discussion about modern design over a glass of wine?

We got there for the discussion with two other friends and dozens of other people too.

The store was arranged with all the chairs facing one direction, I chose our seats while Ricardo was ordering something to eat. There was a food truck with original hot dogs and other things in the parking lot.

Nuestra cita con la gente de DWR llegó. Se acuerdan de la discusión a la que nos invitaron sobre diseño moderno con una copa de vino?

Llegamos a la discusión con otros dos amigos y docenas de personas también.

La tienda estaba ordenada con todas las sillas hacia una misma dirección, elegí nuestros asientos mientras Ricardo ordenaba algo para comer. Habia un camión de comida con hot dogs y otras cosas en el estacionamiento de la tienda.

I love this designer furniture store because one of my hobbies is to look for decoration tips and read DIY blogs. One thing that bloggers have in common is their love of the Eames Molded Chair. They write  about it and upload pictures with beautiful dining rooms with different styles of Eames chairs. Some of them have one or a pair of this chairs in their houses, some paid the money to have one, others found theirs at a second hand store. I would say for me it was love at first sight love with the Eames chair and I started wonder if one day we could have a pair. 

When I got the first time in DWR I saw they had a looooot of them and they showed me all the possible styles to choose from, we were also able to try all the chairs.

Me encanta esta muebleria porque uno de mis hobbies es buscar tips de decoración y leer blogs de ''Hágalo usted mismo''. Una cosa que tienen en común estas blogueras es el amor por la silla Eames. Escriben sobre ella, suben fotos de comedores hermosos con diferentes tipos y colores de la silla Eames. Algunos de ellos tienen alguna silla o un par de ellas, unos han pagado todo el dinero por ellas, otros las han conseguido en tiendas de segunda mano. Puedo decir que para mi fue amor a primera vista con la silla Eames y pensar en que algun dia podriamos tener un par.

Cuando entré a DWR vi que tenian no una, sino muuuuuchas de ellas y me enseñaron todas las opciones con bases y colores diferentes, pudimos también probar todas las sillas que tenian alli.

The Eames Molded Chair, made of fiberglass with reinforced plastic, was designed in the early 50's by Charles and Ray Eames.

It was part of their first mass produced line. The release was great because everyone found it comfortable and colorful. It's really a piece of art so that explains the high price, but I am looking for a original pair in a yard sale. I think it would go in any part of the house.

 

La ''Eames Molded Chair'', hecha de fibra de vidrio reforzada con plástico, fue diseñada en los inicios de los 50's por Charles y Ray Eames. Fue parte de su primer linea de producción masiva. El lanzamiento fue excelente ya que todos la encontraron cómoda y llena de color. Es realmente una obra de arte , por eso es que es tan cara, pero yo estoy buscando un par en alguna venta de garage. Pienso que quedaria bien en cualquier parte de la casa.

At the beginning Ricardo was a little surprised about my love of this chair, he said "it's like a subway seat, it's very simple'' Now I think he likes it more.

Al principio Ricardo estaba un poco sorprendido por mi amor a esta silla, el decia "es como asiento del metro, es muy simple'' Ahora pienso que le gusta mas.

Looking for lamps

I am a girl who loves to take pictures of everything! Someone told me once "you like to document everything!" She was right, also like to look for cute and interesting things.

Soy una chica que ama tomar fotos de todo! Alguien me dijo alguna vez ‘’parece que tienes que documentar todo’’

 One day, while I was talking on the phone with a friend in Mexico, she told me that she had been looking for lamps, so I said to her “Why don’t we take a virtual shopping trip together to Atlanta to look for cute lamps? And if I find something interesting I will take a picture and send it to you’’ (That’s one of the reasons I love smartphones) She agreed, obviously! The very next day I took a walk in this cute neighborhood and went into this furniture store looking for lamps.

Un dia, mientras platicaba por teléfono con una amiga en México, me dijo que estaba buscando lámparas, asi que le dije ‘’Porqué no hacemos juntas, de manera virtual, una busqueda en Atlanta de lamparas lindas? Y si encuentro algo interesante le tomo una foto y te la mando’’ (Este es uno de los motivos por los cuales me encantan los smartphones) Mi amiga estuvo deacuerdo con el plan, obviamente! El siguiente dia mientras hacia una caminata en nuestro lindo vecindario entré a una muebleria buscando lamparas.

I found one that I loved but no matter how crazy I am about taking pictures of everything, sometimes I still have a little bit of prudence and think, ‘’Maybe its not permitted to take pictures here, what should I do?’’

Encontré una que me gustó pero no importa que tan loca sea con eso de tomar fotos de absolutamente todo, algunas veces tengo algo de prudencia y pienso “Quizá no está permitido tomar fotos aqui, qué puedo hacer?’’

 Right! Maybe you were thinking the same thing, ‘’Pretend that you are interested in some furniture, make small talk with the sales person, then ask in a very polite way if it’s possible to take a picture’’

Exacto! Tal vez pensaron lo mismo que yo, ‘’Fingir que estoy interesada en los muebles del lugar, hacer un poco de platica con la vendedora y luego preguntar amablemente si existe la posibilidad de tomar una foto’’

IKEA Atlanta

 So I did and it worked! I took the picture and sent it to my friend. But there was a little problem, they trapped me! And now I love the store, I love the chairs, I love the sofas, tables, bookcases… everything! Not to mention Roberta, the sweetest sales woman who was very gentle and kind from the beginning. She has good taste, a nice voice and she look at you like she already knows you. 

Eso hice y funcionó! Tomé la foto y se la envié a mi amiga. Pero hubo un pequeño problema, me atraparon! Y ahora amo esta tienda, me encantan las sillas, me encantan los sillones, las mesas, los libreros… todo! Eso sin mencionar a Roberta, la mas linda vendedora que jamas haya conocido, muy amable desde el inicio. Con buen gusto, una voz suave, ella me miraba como si ya me conociera de antes.

The second day I went there with Ricardo and when we were at the door the other salesman shouted: “Teresa, we were waiting for you to come back!’’ I showed Ricardo my idea for the dinning room: a wood table with modern chairs. We had a long assessment with the sales man, who made us a demo on his computer with all the possible combinations of chairs in different colors and styles.

At the end they invited us to come back to learn more about modern design over a glass of wine.

That’s what I call excellent customer service.

La segunda vez que fui a esa tienda, fui con Ricardo y desde que pusimos un pie en la tienda uno de los vendedores exclamó ‘’Teresa, te estabamos esperando!’’ Le mostré a Ricardo la idea que yo tenia para el comedor: mesa de madera natural con sillas modernas. Tuvimos una asesoria con el vendedor, quien nos hizo un demo en su computadora con todas las posibles combinaciones de sillas de diferentes colores y estilos con la mesa que me gustó.

Al final nos invitaron para volver a la tienda y platicar mas acerca de arte y diseño moderno, con una copa de vino.

Eso es lo que yo llamo excelente servicio al cliente.

Settling in

We arrived in January and we lived the first month in a corporate apartment (all furnished and set up) we only needed to buy some groceries.

Llegamos en Enero y estuvimos en unos departamentos amueblados (con todo listo) sólo necesitabamos comprar algunas provisiones.

Our neighborhood reminded me of a few places:
- Chapalita, in Guadalajara, because you can find everything within walking distance.
- A neighborhood in Houston, where I stayed with my friends in college.
- Hershey, Pennsylvania, because the cold January weather made me want a cup of hot cocoa.

Diciembre 2010, Hershey PA

Nuestro vecindario me recordaba algunos lugares:
-Chapalita, en Guadalajara, porque podias encontrar lo que fuera a pie.
-Un vecindario en Houston, donde pasé unas vacaciones con mis amigas de la Universidad.
-Hershey, Pensylvania, porque con el clima frio de Enero se me antojaba una taza caliente de chocolate.

If you asked me about this transition period, I would say that it wasn’t an unknown or strange feeling, maybe because I was used to our trips to Hershey in the  five years before that.

Si me preguntas sobre este periodo de transición, diria que no fue como algo extraño o diferente, quizá porque ya me habia acostumbrado a los viajes largos en Hershey que habiamos hecho en los últimos 5 años.

It was really like another trip to Hershey, well the only small (big!!) difference was that this trip didn’t have a return date! Yezz!!

Era como cualquier otro viaje a Hershey, bueno la unica pequeña (gran!!) diferencia era que este viaje no tenia fecha de regreso! Cielos!

The things that bothered me a little about this move were that I wouldn’t be able to work and the language, I didn’t feel so much love for English. So I had a plan B.

Las cosas que me inquietaban un poco sobre esta mudanza era que no tendria permiso para trabajar y el idioma, no sentia mucho amor al Inglés. Asi que tuve un plan B.

Part of this plan consisted of improving my blog in English  and staying on track with the subjects that I like: patchwork, decorating, architecture, cooking, etc. With this idea I would kill 2 birds with one stone:

-       Improve my English writing skills, with the help of my new teacher and

-       Look for new inspiration in the areas that I was interested in.

Parte de este plan consistía en mejorar mi blog, haciéndolo en Inglés y seguir en los temas que me gustan: Patchwork, decoración, arquitectura, cocina etc. Con esta idea mataria dos pájaros de un tiro:

-       Mejorar mis habilidades para escribir en inglés, con la ayuda de mi nueva maestra y

-       Buscar mas inspiración sobre las areas que me gustaban.

Saying goodbye

All the papers were ready, so the only thing left was trying to have quality time with friends and family.

 I started saying goodbye to my students, giving them the news of our moving. I still remember each day I talked with them and tears came.

My oldest sister came with my nephew, my brother and Ricardo's cousin. We had a small party the day they came and I remember we went to sleep at sunrise. 

We traveled to Mexico City, for Christmas. And we returned on January 1st to Guadalajara, our last week living there, to pack our stuff and closed other contracts. 

Los documentos estaban listos, lo único que nos quedaba era pasar tiempo con nuestros amigos y familiares. 

Comencé a despedirme de mis alumnos al darles la noticia sobre nuestra próxima mudanza. Aun recuerdo esos dias y se me salen las lágrimas. 

Mi hermana mayor vino con mi sobrino, mi hermano y un primo de Ricardo. Tuvimos una pequeña reunión ese dia y recuerdo que nos fuimos a dormir cuando el sol iba saliendo.

Viajamos a la Ciudad de México a pasar Navidad. Regresamos el 1 de enero a Guadalajara, nuestra última semana alli,  para empacar nuestras cosas y terminar de cerrar pendientes.
